Wheatland Regional Library Celebrates International Literacy Day

Wheatland Regional Library (WRL) is celebrating International Literacy Day by launching its Family Literacy Project in partnership with the Sun West School Division.

Early Literacy Coordinator, Arin Jorgenson, has been hired to visit grades pre-kindergarten to grade three in the Wheatland Region and Sun West Division. Visits will include a storytime, introduction to the library and presentation of a literacy kit containing a free picture book, book mark, coloring sheet and literacy information. Ms. Jorgenson will also conduct literacy workshops for parents at designated WRL branches. This project is funded by the Partnerships for Community Learning Resources Grant Program, Saskatchewan Learning.

Available on the WRL website, www.wheatlandlibrary.sk.ca, is an online collection of animated talking picture books for children to listen to and read. The Tumblebook Library can be accessed from home 24/7 or at any branch library in the Wheatland region.

Also available at designated WRL branches are new Early Literacy Stations designed for children ages 2 to 8. The stations have an imaginative interface and are packed with top rated developmental programs in the areas of reading and writing, math, arts, reference, science, social studies and computer skills.

“Literacy is one the cornerstones to providing quality public library service. Wheatland Regional Library is proud to initiate literacy programs and services such as the Family Literacy Project, the Tumblebook Library, and the Early Literacy Stations,” comments WRL Director, Michele Fedyk.

Wheatland Regional Library provides library service to the rural communities in West-Central Saskatchewan through its 46 branches and 142 municipalities covering an area the size of Nova Scotia. Its mission is to build strong rural communities by serving information needs, promoting literacy and a love of reading.
