Regional Library Provides Books for Babies
The Wheatland Regional Library welcomes the arrival of spring by launching its Books
for Babies Project. Starting March 13, 2006, Wheatland Regional Library with the
assistance of the Saskatoon Health Region will provide every new born baby in the west
central area of rural Saskatchewan with a free board book, library bag, bookmark and
library/literacy information. Wheatland Regional Library has funded the project and has
put together the reading kits. Public health nurses from the Saskatoon Health Region will
provide the kits to the babies during their six month check up at the local health clinic.
The Books for Babies Project is the first step in a two tiered project aimed at encouraging
families to read to their children and use their public library. As well, Wheatland
Regional Library is the first public library system in Saskatchewan to provide this
program throughout its entire region.
“The project is rather simple and of a small cost, however, it has a far reaching effect for
the Wheatland community towards promoting literacy and a love of reading,” comments
Library Director Michele Fedyk.
Wheatland Regional Library provides library service to rural residents of West-Central
Saskatchewan through 46 branches and 142 municipalities covering an area the size of
Nova Scotia. It is committed to building strong rural communities by serving
information needs, promoting literacy, and developing a love of reading.
