Description The first public library in Beechy was housed in a room in the
vacant school. Some visionary citizens could see this wasn’t
satisfactory. With volunteer labor, a banquet hosted by
the local homemakers club, the raffle of a deep freeze, small
grant from the local recreation club and many, many donations
from private citizens, the library became a reality. The
cinder brick building is very warm in the winter and is cool
as air conditioning in summer. When finances became available,
children’s books were purchased for approximately twenty-five
cents each and hard covers for $1.25. The various librarians
worked gratis or for a small honorarium. Since then, a junior room has been added. We have three
computers, one for administration and two free for public access.
The Beechy Branch of the Wheatland Regional Library was established
December 7, 1967. Mrs. Esther Hooper was our first librarian,
followed closely by Mrs. Ella Holden who held the position for
26 years. Mrs. Doris Hanke was nominated Treasurer in 1956
and is still today, our valued treasurer and board member. |
